A drabble

Time slowed; the stake slid unerringly between ribs into the non-beating heart, and the thought flashed through Xander’s mind that it was almost as if  it were drawn there by magic. He watched as the flesh radiating outwards from the stake turned to dust one mote at a time and began to crumble.

“Buffy?”

“I’m sorry,” Buffy whispered, releasing the stake and bringing her hand up to cover her mouth.

He frowned. “You staked me,” he accused, lisping slightly around his shiny new fangs.

“I’m sorry,” the slayer repeated, a tear sliding down her cheek as he dissolved into dust.
