Day 3

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

It doesn't have to be anything complex - it can be feedback for a fanwork or discussing something you might have in common or even simply admiring their icon. The point is to reach out to someone you normally wouldn't and connect with them, even if it's only for the briefest moment.

I did it.
alwaysjbj: (Giles_reading)
Connection is a large part of what fandom is. Take the time to let creators know you've enjoyed their work.

Day 2

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

[Remember that by fanwork, we are talking about: all forms of creativity. From meta to fic writing to picspamming to hosting a comment-fic-meme to running a challenge, to vidding and podficcing and reccing and pretty much anything you can think of. Crafts, knitted items, repurposed rubber duckies, finger puppets. Pimping posts. Guides to timelines, tattoos, quotes, nit-picky canon guides, episode recaps, synopses, beta work. If you think it's creative, then it definitely fits under the heading "fanwork."]

I decided to go with older (much loved by me) works that newer members of fandom may not have seen.

Rec 1.  Into the Light - Spike/Buffy  by [livejournal.com profile] jen_nsync_landl

Rec 2.
Legions of True Hearts - Buffy/William  by [livejournal.com profile] eurydice72

Rec 3.
Are We Friends? and its sequel Just a Summer Romance Spike/Buffy by [livejournal.com profile] slaymesoftly

Rec 4. Future Imperfect - Spike/Buffy and Butterfly Effect - Spike/Buffy by Cousinjean

I'm going to stop there, although I could go on and on... there are just so many wonderful stories out there! Treat yourself, go and read (or reread) an older fic and don't forget to let the author know that it is still loved!

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Here are four of my favourite fics...

Rec 1: The Longest Night

Written December 2007

Rated PG - A few years post Chosen, a prophecy is revealed, and it falls to Buffy to prevent the end of the Slayer line.

I love this one because I am very proud of how much story and emotion I managed to put into so few words.

~*~

Rec 2: We All Have Destinations

Written July 2006

A short Buffy pov set post Not Fade Away

As with the one above, I love how much story and emotional punch I was able to put into this little ficlet.

~*~

Rec 3. A Grain of Sand - Spike/Buffy (complete)
Rated M15+ - Set in Season 6 somewhere around 'Life Serial' and goes very AR from there as slayer and vampire find themselves scouring dimensions. Will their search be in vain? And what will they learn along the way?

This is one of my favourites because of all the different worlds and the subtle (or not so subtle) differences in those worlds that came about due to a small change to canon in that dimension. I had a lot of fun writing this one and enjoyed tying all my little ends up the way I wanted them at the end.

~*~

Rec 4. Time Around Me Whispers - Spike/Buffy
Written 16th September, 2005
Rated R 18+ - Spuffyverse rewrite of 'Bargaining'

This is another of my favourites because it can still make me (and others) cry when I read it. I love a story to evoke an emotional response--if people tell me a story I wrote made them laugh/cry/angry etc then I am a very happy author.

alwaysjbj: (Spike_writing)
When people look for stories [on story-finding communities, forums etc], they always make them sound awful. Sometimes that's because it really is bad!fic, but often it's good and they just suck at describing the story.

Your mission is to summarise any one (or more!) of my stories badly and I'll try to guess which it is. You could even pretend not to remember details like season, pairing etc to make it harder.

ETA: I commented on someone's icon meme recently and was given icons to do, but my laptop died and I lost the reply, so if it was you, please just point me in the right direction.

Flyby meme snagged from [livejournal.com profile] slaymesoftly

1. What would be your favourite pudding/sweet?

I don't often eat dessert, but I do have a definite soft spot for Tiramisu.

2. If you were able to spend a day with a Celeb .... just chatting, watching them work ... who would it be?

That's a hard one, there are so many it would be wonderful to sit down and chat with, but I think I'll go with Michael Caine--the stories would be fantastic, and he always comes across as a fascinating man to chat with.

3. If you were only allowed to see one film this year, what would it be ... either a new release, or an old favourite.

LOL I agree with Patti, probably "The King's Speech", I'm definitely looking forward to it.

4. If you could visit one city, just for a day, which one would it be? Why?

London-- because it's LONDON! lol I love the history there (also I have family I'd love to see again).

5. If you were able to visit one moment of history, when would it be? Would it be an actual event, or just to see the normal lifestyle?

Again, with the same proviso for safety etc as Patti ...Athens--Ancient Greece, no particular event that I can think of, I'd just love to see it in its heyday.

For those worried, I am fine, the cyclone is about 1000 kms north of  us, but my heart goes out to the poor people in far north Qld who are about to be battered by a category 5 cyclone.

Snagged from quite a few people, but most recently from [livejournal.com profile] slaymesoftly

1. Favourite childhood book?
Hmm...it's impossible to pick one. I got a lovely collection of children's classics as a present when I was about 8 which I adored, my favourites being Around the World in Eighty days, Journey to the Centre of the Earth,  20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Gulliver's Travels, Swiss Family Robinson and other wonderful adventure stories, my least favourite being the more 'girly' books. When I was 10 I was given the Silver Brumby books by Elyne Mitchell which I guess are my absolute favourite childhood books as I have read them so many times I can quote large sections. I also loved and adored Jennie by Paul Gallico, The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper and The Narnia books (although the series I had only had didn't include The Magician's Nephew, so one day I must read that one).

2. What are you reading right now?
Um... a fanfic, actually, but I do have Guild Wars: Edge of Destiny that I just purchased from Amazon waiting for me to finish the fic (although in some way I guess it kind of counts as a fanfic too. lol.)

3. What books do you have on request at the library?
I like to own books, so I don't tend to use the library any more... haven't since my kids were quite young.

4. Bad book habit?
None that I can think of... a book rarely looks read after I finish with it. Oh...does reading to the exclusion of anything else including cooking dinner for my family count?

6. Do you have an e-reader?
Yes. I have an old Sony e-reader which has been used so much its buttons have worn out, so I treated myself to a Kindle last year and absolutely love it!

Reply to this post, and I will tell you my favourite icon of yours. Then post this to your own journal using your own favourite icon.

Picking my favourite was hard! So many much-loved icons to choose from.

I went with this gorgeous Jon icon that [livejournal.com profile] vampkiss made for me because, well, it's Jon (that's reason enough, surely?), and I just adore the cropping.

1) Why do you read fanfic?

For the same reason I write, I love the characters. And, as I hardly buy books anymore, it has the added benefit of saving me a fortune. lol

2) When did you read your first fanfic and which fandom was it for?

2004 BtVS I stumbled upon All About Spike and discovered this strange thing called fanfic.

Get iTunes (or whatever) to list tracks in alphabetical order. Then post the track name and artist of the first song for each letter of the alphabet, with a little comment if you are inclined that way. It should go without saying that you should not skip the embarrassing ones, but feel free to skip ones that aren't really tracks, or are badly labelled.
