My non-fanfic Reading List for 2008

Since I discovered fanfic, I don't read anywhere near as many books as I used to, I still read constantly, but more and more of my reading is fan fic (which saves an awful lot of money! lol). Having said that, I do still enjoy curling up with a good book, so here are the ones that I have read so far this year (or at least as many of them as I can remember).

I'm not going to write a review for them, a lot of them are re-reads, and all but one (*cough*The DaVinci Code*cough) I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Books read...

Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Eldest by Christopher Paolini
Brisingr by Christopher Paolini

Into a Dark Realm by Raymond E Feist
Wrath of a Mad God by Raymond E Feist

Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey
Dragonquest by Anne McCaffrey
Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey
Dragonsinger by Anne McCaffrey
Dragondrums by Anne McCaffrey
The White Dragon by Anne McCaffrey

The Lance Thrower by Jack Whyte

The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown

The Fire Dragon by Katherine Kerr
The Gold Falcon by Katherine Kerr
The Spirit Stone by Katherine Kerr

Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
Greenwitch by Susan Cooper

Sitting around waiting to be read...

Matthew Flinders’ Cat by Bryce Courtenay
The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay
The Grey King by Susan Cooper
Silver on the Tree by Susan Cooper

Waiting to be released or bought...

Rides a Dread Legion by Raymond E Feist
The Shadow Isle by Katherine Kerr
April Fools Day by Bryce Courtenay

Ooooh, I love the Pern series! Her Rowan series is also really good, IMO.

Have you read the Dragon series by Melanie Rawn? I read that years ago and looooooooved it!

Now why do I get the impression you like to read a series in one go? *g*

The Susan Cooper are spectacularly good, IMO, and get better towards the end - the two you have left are the best of all IMO. I really like those early McCaffrey Pern books, though some of the more recent volumes have been off her game a bit I think. And I think I'll add those Kerr books to my TBR list. (Which is measured in galactic distances, of course.)

Interesting list.

LOL They were mostly rereads--except the Inheritance Cycle (Eragon etc), which are my son's books that he recommended. But, yes, I do like to read (or at least reread) a series all in one go.

The Susan Cooper books are fabulous, I've had them since I was a kid and still pull them out to reread every few years.

Those particular Kerr books are a long way in to the series, but I do rec the whole series. They are a little confusing to begin with (they do a lot of time changes), but once you get used to them they are quite good.

Of all the books there, Feist is the one I'd rec the most, but then, along with Sharon Penman, he is the author I drop everything to read when a new book comes out.

I'm glad I'm not the only one reading fewer books because of fanfic! It doesn't help that after the car accident I couldn't hold books to read them, but I could hold a PDA with fanfic on it. :-) It really changed my reading habits.

all but one (*cough*The DaVinci Code*cough) I have thoroughly enjoyed.

I have a review of that one somewhere on my LJ... I was flabberghasted that it had sold so well and that so many people liked it. The writing was *awful*.

I enjoyed the story itself, but the man's writing is painful. I have a couple more of his books sitting here, but I doubt I will get around to reading them. Once upon a time (pre-fan fic), I would have read them once I ran out of other things to read, but I am rarely that desperate now days, and I would probably just reread a favourite fic instead.

I read a lot of fanfic myself. But yeah, books are still wonderful!

I think my husband celebrates the fact that I discovered fanfic, it has saved us a fortune--and saved him having to build even more book cases.

I also love the Ann McCaffrey books - I think I own all of her Pern books and I also have all the Tower and the Hive series (also sometimes called The Rowan series), and a few others as well.

Her first book ever, Restoree, is fascinating as it was set in part in a future which, obviously, has not been quite as she expected - it is still one of the books I go back and reread at least once every year.

I have all the Pern books, the Tower and Hive series, the Crystal Singer books and the Freedom series, but the Pern books are by far my favourite.

I don't think I've read Restoree, I'll have to see if the local library has a copy.

The newer ones (written with or by her son) are okay, I don't like them as much as the original ones, but I think that is because I LOVE those characters.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the Bryce Courtenay's--I've never read any of his but I like him as a person and have enjoyed the interviews I've seen on the telly. I have to read Matthew Flinders' Cat first, I bought it for David in the Lifeline book sale at the beginning of the year and he loved it--I have been promising him I would read it since about February. lol

Have you read any others of his? I'm in two minds about reading April Fools Day, I would like to read it--but it is going to be so sad. While I love angsty books, I'm not so keen when I know they are true stories.
