Happy ever after. Ethan’s eyes squeezed closed, his fists balling tightly at his side and his jaw clenching so firmly that it ached. Alone. He sat in the darkness of the empty space he had once called home. Shutting out the world and shutting in the pain. Holding it close to him like a lifeline. He should have known; all his years on the streets, playing the game, working the punters with quick words and cleverly woven lies should have taught him. Happily ever after was only for fairytales, but for a short while he had allowed himself to believe the myth and as reality crashed down around his ears he knew he would give anything to be able to reclaim that belief.
