He leaned against the doorjamb, content to stay out of the way and let the nurse get on with her work as his eyes greedily drank in the sight of his slayer. His heart swelled in his breast. It was cliché, but he didn’t know any other way to describe the sensation as he watched the tiny pink-clad bundles being carefully placed in their mother’s arms.
Her dark hair fanned in stark contrast against the crisp, pristine whiteness of the pillow. A weary smile curved the corners of her lips as, with a nod from the nurse, he was readmitted to the room, her eyes lighting in that special way that was reserved only for him and had always made him feel like he’d won the lottery—or better.
“Hey, you,” he offered as he settled carefully on the edge of the bed. “How are my girls doing?”
“Sleepy,” she offered in return, laughing softly when one of the bundles’ tiny little cupid bow mouth opened in a wide yawn as if to prove her mother’s point.
“Then go to sleep.” He stroked her hair back from her face, his fingers carding gently through the soft, rich mahogany waves that still held the faintest trace of dampness from her recent shower.
“Will you stay?” Faith asked sleepily, her lids fluttering before drifting slowly closed. “Watch over the girls?”
“There’s nowhere I’d rather be,” he assured her.
He had no idea how much time passed as he watched them sleep, his eyes memorising every detail of the twins’ faces. They were all beautiful. His girls. His three angels.
He reached out and gently traced the delicate silver bracelet just peeking out above the fold of pink cloth encasing the closest of his daughters. ‘Alexandra’ was engraved in beautiful flowing script. It, along with the matching one that Jessica wore, was a gift from their God-father. Giles had sent the bracelets a few weeks ago, as soon as he’d been informed of his soon-to-be god-daughters’ names.
Giles, and everyone else, would be flying in the next day to meet the newest members of the Scooby clan. As much as he was looking forward to showing his beautiful girls off, he couldn’t help the twinge of regret that this sense of serenity wouldn’t last, that soon he would have to share them with the world.
With a sigh, Xander climbed off the bed and settled back in the chair to enjoy a few hours peace alone with his family.

Date: 11/7/11 08:54 pm (UTC)Xander was one of my least favourite characters on the show. He mostly annoyed me because he'd have moments of being this fabulous, mature, caring, sensible guy, then the writers would revert him to annoying, narrow-minded, self-centred teen!Xander. It seemed like he was never allowed to grow up and become the man he had the potential to be... I much prefer fan fic Xander.
Usually when I write Xander he starts out as whiny annoying Xander, then grows into mature Xander--this particular piece is obviously set once he's done his growing up.

Date: 11/7/11 09:15 pm (UTC)I'm melting. I love the idea of Xander and Faith as a happy, healthy couple. In my mind, they have a rather stormy journey - a journey that makes moments like this especially precious.
This little story has made my day.

Date: 11/7/11 11:27 pm (UTC)I really like Xander with Faith... he's always had a slayer obsession, and I think Faith is a much better fit for Xander than Buffy.
They way I see it, Faith needs someone who will care for her deeply, while at the same time is willing to call her on it when she's being bitchy--not letting her get away with being withdrawn and spiteful when things don't go her way. Xander needs a strong woman (I don't mean physically, although I'm sure he doesn't mind that too!) who he respects as well as loves. I see them as bringing out the best in each other. I love Faith with Wesley too, for much the same reasons.
