COULD HAVE TURNED RIGHT

Snow. In sunny bloody California!

He slammed the car into park, glaring at the long line of not-moving traffic ahead.

A piddling inch of snow and anyone would think it was the second coming the way the locals were flocking to Sunnyhell.

An overly excited woman twittered on about the Christmas miracle and he twirled the dial angrily, looking for a station that didn’t feel the need for a weather report every fifteen bloody minutes. It seemed every station sported its own high-pitched, addle-brained woman rabbiting on at a million mile an hour in a loud American voice about the freak snowstorm, and he slammed his fist into the power button. Silence truly was golden.

He’d had enough of dim-witted women to last several lifetimes.

With a growl he threw the car back into drive, reefed on the wheel and slammed his foot on the accelerator. Smoke poured from the tyres, and he threw his head back, laughing in time to the crunch of metal and honking horns as the big car sashayed violently up the wrong side of the road heading back towards LA.

Wasn’t like he had any real reason to go back to the Hellmouth. Plenty of places he could go, he told himself as he pulled off the highway and onto the on-ramp, gunning the DeSoto towards the oncoming car. Grinning maniacally, he flipped the driver a two-fingered salute as she swerved to avoid him.

He reached the end of the on-ramp, and the tyres squealed in protest as he took the sharp left at speed.

Next stop— Europe. Or maybe he’d head home, see how jolly old England was faring under its new Labour PM. Anywhere but here. To hell with Dru, Sunnydale, the slayer and the whole bleeding country.

He was a free vamp!
