The flames licked gently along the edges, spreading out and fanning until they engulfed the envelope. The blaze rapidly consumed the paper, burning with a brief, raging intensity only to die back suddenly, leaving nothing but ashes.
A sob tore painfully from the depths of her being as she watched the flames sputter and die, the last tendrils of smoke twisting in the night air as they dissipated; carrying with them to the heavens the words she had written painstakingly in her neatest script on the finest paper she’d been able to locate.
“Goodbye, Spike,” Buffy whispered. “I miss you.”
