Spuffy ficlet

My Choice
Murmuring soft words of comfort, she ran her fingers gently through his hair in time with her voice.
The bus jerked to a stop and everyone piled out, leaving them alone in the darkened back corner.
Through the blacked-out windows, she could hear them talking; the collective murmur of excitement, grief, and relief followed by the startled gasps and Giles’ quietly posed question, “I don’t understand. What did this?”
“Spike,” Faith answered succinctly.
Buffy and Faith’s relationship had slowly been improving since the dark-haired slayer’s unexpected arrival in Sunnydale—they’d had their ups and downs, but on the whole things had been looking up; however, Buffy had never been more grateful for Faith’s presence than in those last few moments inside the Hellmouth.
Despite his protests, she’d ripped the amulet from around Spike’s neck, and as their world crumbled around them, Faith had helped her manhandle the stubborn vampire—who’d insisted that he still had a job to do—out of the cavern and to safety. At some point during their flight he’d lost consciousness and Buffy couldn’t help but feel it was a mercy; his face was ravaged with cuts and burns and she knew that his clothes hid similar, if not worse.
A soft moan drew her attention once more to the vampire; blood had soaked her pants where his head rested in her lap, and his hair was dark and matted where it had dried. “Shh,” she told him, bending to brush a soft kiss against his curls. “It’s going to be alright. I promise.” She dashed away the tears that gathered, before caressing his cheek gently, being careful not to cause him any further pain. “I love you, Spike. I came so close to…” She sniffed, her voice choked with emotion as she continued, “to losing you. I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you,” she added quietly.
She watched dispassionately as the others piled back onto the bus. The former potentials cast curious glances towards the back of the bus, then gathered together in the front seats to whisper amongst themselves. Giles looked around then started down the aisle towards her. She subconsciously drew Spike closer, wincing when her actions caused him to moan once more. “I’m sorry,” she soothed gently.
Squaring her shoulders, she lifted her head and prepared to face down her watcher's ire.
“How is he?”
Giles’ quiet concern startled her. “Not good,” she answered, her lip trembling as she deflated. “But he’ll be okay with rest—and blood,” she added.
He nodded, adjusting his glasses as he turned away. “We best be going, then. We’ll arrange for blood when we stop. I believe we have enough slayers onboard to have him back on his feet in no time.”
