Not Real

It didn’t matter, not really—after all she wasn’t real. Maybe once she was gone things would go back to how they should be? Tara’s mind might be restored. Buffy could go back to school. And maybe, just maybe her mom wouldn’t be dead anymore.

Then why was she so scared? Why did the thought make a huge lump of fear rise in her throat, the harsh sting of tears prickle behind too hot lids and the icky queasy feeling begin swirling in her belly?

Why did hope bubble in her chest when the leather-clad blonde vampire surged into view?

I never understood people who professed to hate Dawn - the most common argument I heard defending this was, "She's so WHINY!" I'd be patient and try to explain that (a) Dawn's a teenager, uncertain, trying to figure out who she is, inquisitive little hormone bomb, and (b) she learns that everything she's ever believed about herself and her world is manufactured. I think she's entitled to a little whininess, myself.

That being said, I love glimpses like this into her and her fears; in just a few words you've encapsulated the very essence of Dawn, and why she deserves sympathy and understanding. Love it.

There were definitely times when Dawn was infinitely annoying, but the same can be said of any teenager. I hated that they decided to distance her from Spike so much in the last season--I would have loved to see them make up.

Oh, lovely. That's how I always saw Spike and Dawn in this season. He was willing to die for her and she knew it.

Brilliant. I would have to agree with the others. I never understood why people didn't like Dawn. Sure she was a little whiny, but so is every other teenager under the sun. And I think she's more lovable than anything else.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Yeah, I rather like Dawn. She does have a few problems and can definitely be annoying at times but she is a teenager and she's had a rough couple of years... I think that explains a certain amount of whining!
